Did you know you are loved, and, like Bridget Jones, you are loved just as you are?
Oh, how hard that phrase, that truth, is to hear, to take in, to believe.
But true it is. You are loved. You are worthy. You are sufficient.
It is so easy to be dismayed by all the ways we don’t measure up to our own standard for ourselves; ashamed at how often we fail in virtue or practices of faith.
God’s unfailing love for us does not excuse complacency. We know it is good to continue to grow in wisdom and virtue. It is prudent to place ourselves under accountability to trusted individuals – spouse, community, parents, spiritual director – who will let us know when we get off track.
It’s important to distinguish between ongoing formation as a natural progression in life, and believing we must somehow be more, do more in order to win God’s approval.
Invite God in. Allow Him to participate in your life. He is a living, loving Father and He wants to be known by you. Let yourself be open to Him. Be receptive to the love He has to give you uniquely from everyone else. He has gifts for you. He is longing to take His place in your heart.
Scripture is full of assurances that God loves us. Here are just a few:
Psalm 103:11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love
Psalm 139: 13,14 For You created my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise You for I am fearfully, wonderfully made.
Jeremiah 1: 5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.
